Catch up theatre
You can still catch BROKEN GLASS at the Young Vic, London. It’s a play by Arthur Miller which is rarely performed. Here it is given a clear and effective production with relevance to today’s political climate.
A Jewish couple deal with events in Germany in 1938. Sylvia Gellburg (Pearl Chanda), an ordinary housewife, is horrified to read about Nazi atrocities, particularly Kristallnacht. It affects her so deeply that her legs become seemingly paralysed and she can’t move. Her husband, Phillip (Eli Gelb), however, is indifferent to the suffering overseas. He deams his wife’s paralysis to be psychosomatic. As does her doctor (Alex Waldmann) who pronounces her disability psychosomatic.
A good set and lighting enable short scenes to take place in different areas. The acting is consistently high standard.
Looking the political climate today, there are many who read the newspapers but don’t believe that war is in other countries affect them at all. While others keenly feel that horrors and other countries affect all of us.
Do try to see Arthur Miller‘s play while it is on the YoungVic.
