New exhibition at London Transport Museum celebrates 30 years of the London Underground Football League

London Transport Museum is continuing summer football fever with a new temporary exhibition that highlights a unique part of London’s transport history – The London Underground Football League.

 

Celebrating its 30th year in 2026, the league has grown from its grassroots beginnings in 1996 into a fully governed competition with FA-certified officials, fostering connection and camaraderie across all areas of TfL’s staff network. Today, twelve teams represent almost all of London’s eleven Tube lines and beyond, including teams from the British Transport Police, the Overground and the Elizabeth line.

 

The Between the Lines exhibition highlights the stories of these everyday Londoners – TfL employees, apprentices and veterans – who have shaped the League’s development and built it into a thriving community based on a shared passion. Displays include player profiles, photos, trophies, kits and personal items that reveal the human stories behind the jerseys. Visitors will also be able to step into a recreated team changing room.

The exhibition will screen an edited preview from a new documentary film commissioned by the Museum that follows the Jubilee line FC team through one of the most important seasons in their history. After earning promotion as unbeaten Division Two champions, the team enter Division One for the first time, facing tougher opposition and higher expectations while balancing demanding jobs, health challenges and personal lives. Visitors will be able to watch the full documentary by scanning a QR code within the display.

 

 

 

The exhibition was created as part of London Transport Museum’s Documentary Curator programme, funded by Arts Council England, focusing on contemporary collecting to record and share the stories, objects and experiences of Londoners today to preserve them for future generations.

 

The Between the Lines exhibition is expected to remain open until the end of the year. Entry to all London Transport Museum exhibitions is included with admission. Adult tickets include free return day-time entry for a whole year, and kids go free! Book at ltmuseum.co.uk

 

Great British Summer Savings

London Transport Museum is participating in the Government’s Great British Summer Savings initiative, helping visitors enjoy great days out for less.

 

As part of the scheme, a temporary reduction in VAT means reduced prices on selected admission tickets, Hidden London tours and participating children’s meals in the Museum café between 25 June and 1 September 2026.

Football city: London and the beautiful game
Panel discussion + Q&A

Head to London Transport Museum this autumn for an evening panel discussion, springboarding from the exhibition theme of football in London.

 

Chaired by football culture researcher Dr Josh Bland, in conversation with art and football writer, Orit Gat, and sports and architectural historian, Simon Inglis, the panel will explore how London’s particular character creates a unique football scene in the capital.

Learn about the ways transport helps people play and follow football in London, how the city’s football landscape has evolved over time and shaped its neighbourhoods, and discover how football intersects with themes of home and identity.
