Halloween at Bodmin Jail: Family Frights and After-Dark Experiences
From a family Trick or Treat Trail and Haunted Gallery to darker guided tours and an ’80s Halloween party, Bodmin Jail has a packed programme for October.
Bodmin Jail Museum is turning up the atmosphere this Halloween, inviting families, history enthusiasts and thrill-seekers to explore Cornwall’s darker past through a month of seasonal activities, immersive experiences and special events.
With its imposing historic walls, original prison spaces and stories of crime, punishment and reported hauntings, Bodmin Jail provides a distinctive setting for Halloween. This year’s programme combines family-friendly discovery with darker historical storytelling and after-dark entertainment.
For families visiting during half-term, the Trick or Treat Halloween Trail, running from 17 to 31 October, offers games, puzzles and riddles throughout the jail. Participants can follow the trail, uncover Cornwall’s darker history and claim a prize from the gift shop. The activity is included with jail entry and is designed to provide younger visitors and families with a playful way to explore the historic attraction.
Visitors can also step into The Haunted Gallery, open throughout October. The exhibition explores famous hauntings from around the world, paranormal phenomena and the ghostly stories associated with Bodmin Jail and beyond. Themed cells and atmospheric interpretation invite visitors to examine the folklore, history and beliefs that have shaped our fascination with the supernatural. The Haunted Gallery is included with self-guided entry.
Those wanting to explore the jail’s history in greater depth can join the Go Darker Guided Tour, running throughout October. The special Halloween tour delves into Cornwall’s darker past, exploring stories of crime, punishment, executions and the people who lived behind the jail’s walls.
For those looking for an extra Halloween thrill, Bodmin Jail’s Ghost Walks run every Thursday, Friday and Saturday throughout October. Suitable for ages 12 and over, the walks explore the Jail after dark, sharing stories of reported hauntings, paranormal encounters and some of the most chilling events from its history.
The programme continues after dark with Banged Up in Bodmin Jail, the attraction’s Halloween party on 30 October, from 8pm until 2am. In collaboration with Cornish favourites Jam & Meme, the event brings classic ’80s Halloween to the historic venue, with two stages promising a night of music, mayhem and fancy-dress fun.
For visitors seeking a more immersive paranormal experience, Bodmin Jail also lists its After Dark: Halloween Special on 31 October. The official website currently lists this event as sold out.
From family puzzles and ghostly folklore to a late-night celebration, Bodmin Jail’s Halloween programme offers different ways to experience the attraction and discover the stories that continue to surround its historic walls.
