London Transport Museum: Piccadilly June Sunday Special Heritage Train Journey kicks off a summer of events

 

• Tickets now on sale for the Sunday 9 June Piccadilly Sunday Special event
• Travel back in time on a 1938 Art Deco-style vintage train this summer
• Further heritage train outings planned in July, August and September

Guests aboard a beautifully restored 1938 burgundy Underground train will be treated to a trip across central London on Sunday 9 June as they travel on the Piccadilly line from Acton Town station in west London to Oakwood station in north London. Single tickets are also available from Oakwood station to Acton Town station.  The Piccadilly Sunday Special outing will launch a season of heritage events organised by London Transport Museum on the London Underground network.

All four Heritage Train Journeys events taking place over the summer in the months of June, July, August and September, will involve the much-loved 1938 Art Deco-style train which was one of the capital’s longest serving Tube trains and is a relic of London’s transport past. Some events will include costumed actors from a bygone era, craft workshops, souvenir booklets, a transport collectibles stall or a talented busker.

Families, transport enthusiasts, vintage fans and those looking for a nostalgic experience of the golden age of travel can choose from the following events. It should be noted that tickets are only currently on sale for the Sunday 9 June event.

 

 

Piccadilly Sunday Special, Heritage Train Journeys, Sunday 9 June 2024

At this first event of 2024 passengers will travel from Acton Town station along the central London section of the Piccadilly line all the way to Oakwood station. The journey will take approximately 50 minutes.  For those wishing to start their travels in north London there are single tickets from Oakwood station to Acton Town station.

 

At Oakwood station guests can enjoy a mini talk about the architect Charles Holden and how his innovative station design has played a major role in shaping the appearance of London. At Acton Town station guests will be able to shop for transport collectibles at a pop-up stall run by the London Transport Museum Friends.  Guests will receive an informative souvenir booklet to remember their experience.

Summer Special, Heritage Train Journeys, Saturday 20 July – Sunday 21 July 2024

The world’s first underground railway opened in 1863 in London, and ever since, the Tube has grown to become an iconic part of life in London for both residents and visitors. At the turn of the 20th century, London was quickly growing in size and population and consequently London’s transport network had to grow too.

 

The Summer Special event will celebrate the 120th anniversary of the extension of the Metropolitan Line out to Uxbridge from Harrow-on-the-Hill station. There will be special trips between Uxbridge to Harrow-on-the Hill. On arrival guests will receive a souvenir booklet and meet a costumed actor playing the pioneer in station architecture, Charles Holden, who designed both Acton Town and Uxbridge stations. Music will be provided by a talented Transport for London busker.

The 1938 stock train was the first kind of deep-level Tube train to have all the electrical equipment underneath the floor, combining the latest technology of the time with quintessential late 1930s style. These trains served London, on several deep-level Tube lines, for half a century. This carefully restored electrified train is made up of four cars complete with green and red moquette seating, grab handles and distinctive Art Deco light fittings.

Heritage Train Journeys: The Heathrow Loop, Saturday 10 August – Sunday 11 August 2024

No summer holiday booked? Then enjoy a trip on a historic vehicle as modern-day aircraft fly above you on the Piccadilly line. Day trippers can check out transport collectibles at a London Transport Museum Friends stall at a west London station where they will board and leave the train. Families can take part in our drop-in craft activity before boarding the train. Guests will receive an informative souvenir booklet to remember their experience.

Heritage Train Journeys: Amersham Special 

Saturday 7 September – Sunday 8 September 2024

The final Heritage Train Journeys event of the season will coincide with the popular annual Amersham Heritage Day to be held in Amersham town on the Sunday 8 September 2024. Journeys will start at Amersham station on the Metropolitan line however the exact route is yet to be confirmed. Guests will receive an informative souvenir booklet to remember their experience. Those wishing to attend should keep an eye on London Transport Museum’s website for further details about the planned events programme to accompany the Heritage Train Journeys event.
