Join the Tube’s 160th birthday celebrations with a ride on one of London Transport Museum’s ‘Tube 160 Birthday Special’ heritage journeys. The world’s first underground railway opened in 1863 in London, since then the Tube has grown to become an iconic part of life in the capital for residents and visitors. On the weekend of Saturday 10 June and Sunday 11 June the public will have the opportunity to be transported to a bygone era of train travel with journeys on a pristine Art Deco-style 1938 vintage Tube train. The vehicle was one of the capital’s longest serving Tube trains and is a relic of London’s transport past.

The 1938 stock was the first kind of Tube train to have all of the electrical equipment underneath the floor, combining the latest technology of the time with quintessential late 1930s style. These trains served London, on several deep-level Tube lines, for half a century. The beautifully restored electrified trains are made up of four cars complete with green and red moquette seating, grab handles and distinctive Art Deco light fittings.
Return journeys on the restored trains will run from Acton Town to Heathrow Terminal 4, taking approximately one and a quarter hours. There will be a real sense of occasion with live music and the chance to chat with costumed actors. See if you can persuade one to join you when you take a selfie against the glorious Tube160 #LoveTheTube giant backdrop, created especially for the 160th year. Adults and children can also enjoy some craft time making an oyster card holder, that can then be put into use for future journeys in and around London.
Ticket holders will have the chance to buy transport collectibles at the London Transport Museum’s Friends stall and take home a special souvenir leaflet.
Sam Mullins OBE, Director, London Transport Museum, said: ‘We’re looking forward to celebrating the Tube’s 160th anniversary with our much-loved 1938 heritage train event. London Underground has evolved greatly over the last 160 years, from the early steam locomotives to modern Elizabeth line trains, but nothing beats the thrill of an Art Deco classic journey.’
